Spring is just around the corner, and fishing conditions are heating up across San Luis Obispo County! Here's the latest on what's happening on our local waters.
๐๏ธ Lake Fishing Reports
Santa Margarita Lake
Water temps are sitting in the low 50s following recent storms. The lake is full with slightly stained visibility. Bass fishing is picking up โ anglers are reporting catches in the 2 lb range using swim jigs and paddle tail trailers. Some fish are being caught within 15 feet of shore, which could signal the early pre-spawn movement.
Whale Rock Reservoir
Largemouth Bass fishing has been steady! Reports indicate fish in the 2-2.5 lb range, with occasional catches up to 3.5-4 lbs. The best bite window is typically 9:00 - 11:00 AM. Finesse presentations are working best right now โ try Ned Rigs, Swing Heads, or Texas-rigged stick baits in natural colors.
San Antonio Lake
Water temp: 53ยฐF, roughly half full.
- Trout: A few are being caught on chartreuse or rainbow PowerBait, but the bite has been slow since the December plant
- Catfish: Good action! Best around cove backs and inlet areas using garlic shrimp or chicken liver โ fish running 2-4 lbs
- Bass: In deeper winter patterns; occasional catches on deep-diving crankbaits and jigs in 15-25 feet
Lake Nacimiento (Monterey/SLO County Border)
Located on the Monterey/San Luis Obispo County line, Lake Nacimiento is around 50% full and offering excellent bass fishing!
- Spotted Bass: High numbers with some larger largemouth mixed in
- Best Baits: Finesse plastic worms, small jigs in brown, purple, and baitfish colors

- White Bass: Being caught near shad schools on spoons and spinners
- Catfish: Still active on chicken livers and shrimp
- Tip: Bigger bass are holding onto jigs longer โ give them time!
