San Luis Obispo County Fishing Report: 03-27-26

Good morning, Central Coast anglers! Here's your latest fishing report for March 27th, 2026.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Weather Notes

Heat Advisory in Effect! Unseasonably warm temperatures are hitting SLO County this week โ€” beaches, inland valleys, and lake areas are seeing temps well above normal. This is affecting water temperatures and fish behavior patterns.

๐Ÿž๏ธ Lake Fishing Reports

Lake Nacimiento ๐ŸŒŸ

  • Temp: ~70ยฐF (warming fast!), Clear water, 58% capacity
  • White Bass: โœ… EXCELLENT! Spawning season โ€” fish are actively feeding on main lake points
  • Spotted Bass: Very active โ€” aggressive on moving baits as water warms
  • Best Lures: White/silver bladed jigs, hula grubs, spinnerbaits, pin-tail trailers
  • Crappie: Good โ€” 3-inch swimbaits near rocky pockets and boat docks
  • Bass: Great โ€” shallow water activity increasing with warming temps
  • Tip: Fish early morning before temps spike โ€” late afternoon can slow the bite

Santa Margarita Lake

  • Temp: Low 60s, stained visibility, near full capacity
  • Largemouth Bass: โœ… GOOD BIT! Fish moving shallow for pre-spawn
  • Best Baits: Senkos, drop-shots, Neko rigs, shallow crankbaits
  • Crappie: Active on primary points โ€” try small jigs in bright colors
  • Catfish: Excellent โ€” chicken liver and garlic shrimp producing big fish
  • Tip: Focus on backs of coves where water warms fastest

Lopez Lake

  • Temp: Warming into low 60s
  • Bass: Good โ€” shad-colored crankbaits and jerkbaits working well
  • Panfish: Crappie and bluegill near marina area
  • Tip: Drop-shot in 20+ ft for quality bass

San Antonio Lake

  • Temp: ~58ยฐF, ~48% capacity, slightly stained
  • Trout: Fair โ€” chartreuse/rainbow PowerBait near inflows
  • Catfish: โœ… Good! 2-5 lbs on garlic shrimp at cove backs
  • Bass: Improving โ€” try shallow crankbaits in 10-15 ft
  • Tip: Afternoon fishing better as water reaches peak temps

๐ŸŒŠ Ocean Fishing: Morro Bay

Spring ocean fishing is heating up alongside the warm weather!

  • Lingcod: Good โ€” up to 30+ lbs, solid action
  • Rockfish: Excellent across all species
  • Vermilion Rockfish: Strong showing
  • Copper Rockfish: Good numbers
  • Bocaccio: Active in deeper waters

Current Bait Report:

  • ๐ŸŸ Mackerel โ€” abundant in the bay
  • ๐ŸŸ Smelt โ€” active near shores
  • ๐ŸŸ Squid โ€” strips working very well!

Best Ocean Lures Right Now:

  • 7" Squid strips
  • Big Hammer swimbaits
  • Work 100-150 ft depth

Water Temp: ~54ยฐF at Ft. McAllister โ€” warming quickly!

โš ๏ธ Note: Watch for foggy conditions โ€” dense sea fog can limit visibility, especially morning hours. Navigate carefully if heading out on the water.

๐Ÿ“… What to Expect This Week

  • Bass spawning activity at peak at Lake Nacimiento
  • White bass bite should remain excellent
  • Ocean fishing improving with rising water temps
  • Catfish action strong at all lakes
  • Morning bites will be best given warm afternoon conditions
