SLO County Fishing Report: May 6, 2026
🎣 SLO County Fishing Report — May 6, 2026
It's May 6th, and the fishing scene on the Central Coast is heating up! Here's your updated report on what's happening across our local lakes and ocean spots.
🏞️ Lakes
Lake Nacimiento
Lake Nacimiento remains the crown jewel for SLO County anglers. This 5,000-acre reservoir offers an impressive 165 miles of shoreline and is renowned for its white bass fishery—in fact, it's one of the best in the state for cast-to-fish ratios.
What's biting:
- White bass 🐟 — The star of Nacimiento! Excellent numbers right now
- Largemouth bass — Good action on drop shots along points and river channels
- Smallmouth bass — Active in deeper areas
- Crappie & bluegill — Solid for panfish anglers
- Channel catfish — Night fishing is picking up
Recommended techniques: Drop shots on points and river channels have been producing well. Small swimbaits are also working. Topwater has been slow—fish seem to be hanging deeper as water temps rise.
Water conditions: Warmer temps bringing fish into shallower feeding zones. Key fishing areas include the east end near the dam andmain river channels.
Lopez Lake
Just 10 miles east of Arroyo Grande, Lopez Lake is a scenic 940-acre gem that's perfect for a day on the water.
What's biting:
- Largemouth bass 🐟 — Good overall action
- Crappie — Popular with local anglers
- Red-ear sunfish — Great for families and beginners
- Catfish — Best during low-light hours
Tips: Get there early to beat the breeze. Morning fishing between 6-9 AM has been most productive.
⚠️ Quagga Mussel Alert: SLO County Parks reminds anglers to clean, drain, and dry all gear between trips. These invasive mussels can ruin Lopez Lake—help protect our waters!
Santa Margarita Lake
Also managed by SLO County Parks, Santa Margarita Lake offers a quieter alternative with good year-round fishing.
Species: Largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish. Call ahead—water levels vary with the season.
🌊 Ocean / Morro Bay
Morro Bay & Ocean Fishing
May marks the transition on the water:
- Water temperatures are warming—yellowtail and white sea bass are pushing north along the coast
- Halibut are starting to move onto inshore sand flats
- Rockfish (cabezon, lingcod, various reef fish) remain reliable year-round from the jetty and charter boats
- Surf fishing at Morro Strand and Avila Beach: perch, corbina, and occasional halibut in the surf
Regulations Reminder
- Check CDFW ocean fishing regulations before heading out—some species have size/catch limits that changed in 2026
- Marine Protected Areas near Points Buchon and Poetesses have enhanced protections—know your zones
📅 Coming Up
- General trout season opens May 23, 2026 (Saturday before Memorial Day) at higher-elevation lakes and streams throughout SLO County
- Memorial Day weekend typically marks the start of busy season on all lakes—arrive early for best parking
