SLO County Fishing Report: May 8, 2026

🎣 SLO County Fishing Report — May 8, 2026

It's May 8th, and things are heating up on the Central Coast! Summer fishing spots are really starting to come alive. Here's your report on what's happening across our local lakes and ocean spots.

🏞️ Lakes

Lake Nacimiento

Lake Nacimiento remains the king of SLO County fisheries—this 5,000-acre monster delivers year after year with 165 miles of shoreline and consistent white bass action.

What's biting:

  • White bass 🐟 — Excellent! This is prime time— Anglers are limiting out regularly
  • Largemouth bass — Good on drop shots along points and creek channels
  • Smallmouth bass — Active in deeper structural areas
  • Crappie & bluegill — Solid panfish action for families
  • Channel catfish — Heating up fast for night fishermen

Recommended techniques: Small swimbaits and drop shots on primary points. With warming water temps (low 60s), fish are moving shallower during dawn and dusk windows.

Key areas: East end near the dam, main river channels, points with rocky transitions.

Lopez Lake

Just 10 miles east of Arroyo Grande, Lopez Lake is a scenic 940-acre gem—perfect for families or aquiet day on the water.

Current conditions: Water levels are good for this time of year. Morning bites (6-9 AM) have been most consistent before the wind picks up.

What's biting:

  • Largemouth bass 🐟 — Good overall action
  • Crappie — Popular with local anglers
  • Red-ear sunfish — Great for kids and beginners
  • Catfish — Best during low-light hours

⚠️ Quagga Mussel Alert: All vessels must arrive CLEAN, DRAINED, and DRY before launching. Help protect our waters!

Santa Margarita Lake

A quieter alternative with solid year-round fishing and fewer crowds.

Current conditions: Water temps in the low 50s (52°F), stained visibility following spring inflows.

What's biting:

  • Crappie 🐟 — Most consistent; suspended on primary points with bright jigs
  • Channel catfish — Solid, with fish to 15 lbs reported this season
  • Largemouth bass — Improving as water warms; try finesse rigs
  • Trout — Last plant was late February 2026

Techniques: Small jigs fished slowly are working well for crappie. Catfish hitting cut bait in deeper pockets.

🌊 Ocean / Morro Bay

Morro Bay & Ocean Fishing

May means the ocean is Transition Time:

  • Water temps climbing into the low 50s — yellowtail and white sea bass migrating north
  • Halibut are hitting inshore sand flats—prime time for beach anglers!
  • Rockfish (cabezon, lingcod, reef fish) reliable year-round from the jetty and charters
  • Surf fishing at Morro Strand & Avila Beach: perch and corbina active, occasional halibut in the surf

Charter Updates

Morro Bay charter boats are running daily trips. The kayak fishery is Heating up too— anglers scoring halibut and bass in the bay edges and kayak-only zones.
