Bodega Bay

Bodega Bay is a working fishing harbor and coastal village in Sonoma County, about an hour and a half north of San Francisco. It sits at the edge of the rugged Sonoma Coast, where the Pacific hits hard against bluffs and beaches that feel genuinely wild. It's less polished than many California coastal towns, and that's exactly the appeal — the scenery is dramatic, the pace is slow, and the seafood is fresh off the boats.

The town is anchored by its harbor, where commercial fishing and whale watching boats come and go. The surrounding coastline is part of the Sonoma Coast State Park, which stretches for miles and includes some of Northern California's most breathtaking beaches. Tide timing is especially important along the Sonoma Coast. Sneaker waves are real here — even on seemingly calm days, large sets can surge far up the beach without warning. Always watch the water before approaching the shoreline, and never turn your back on the ocean.
