Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach is where art meets ocean. This small coastal city in Orange County has been an artist colony since the 1920s, and you'll feel that creative energy everywhere — from the galleries lining Coast Highway to the stunning cliffside gardens. The beaches here are more rugged than the sandy stretches to the north, with tide pools, sea caves, and dramatic rock formations that make exploring at low tide a must.

Beaches and coastal attractions:

• Main Beach — The central hub of Laguna Beach. Perfect for swimming, volleyball, and people-watching. Big summer crowds but worth it for the classic Laguna vibe.
• Crystal Cove State Park — Southern Laguna's crown jewel. Three miles of pristine coastline with tide pools, sea caves, and backcountry trails. The Shake Shack (yes, really) serves cold drinks at the old cottage turned snack bar.
• Rockpile Beach — A local favorite at the north end of town. Good for snorkeling when the water's calm and the waves aren't too big. Park at the top and hike down.
• Victoria Beach — Known for the iconic "La Tour" tower that rises from the sand — a remnant of a 1920s estate. Smaller beach, great for low-key days.
• Thousand Steps Beach — You guessed it: descend about 200 steps to reach this secluded stretch. Popular with locals, especially at sunset. Great tide pools at the south end.
• Heisler Park — Clifftop park with grassy areas, BBQ pits, and panoramic ocean views. Stairways lead down to two small beaches.
• Top of the World — Drive or hike up to this clifftop viewpoint for insane 360-degree views. Sunrise and sunset are both spectacular.

Things to do:

• Art Galleries — Laguna Beach has over 100 art galleries. Laguna Art Museum focuses on California artists, while downtown is packed with contemporary galleries. First Thursday art walks are legendary.
• Tide Pool Exploring — The Laguna Coast is one of the best places in OC for tide pools. Head to Crystal Cove, Rockpile, or Thousand Steps at low tide. Look for sea stars, hermit crabs, anemones, and if you're lucky, octopus.
• Kayaking & Paddleboarding — The sea caves at Crystal Cove are best explored by kayak. Rentals and tours available through Laguna Ocean Adventures.
• Hiking — Laguna Coast Wilderness Park offers miles of trails through canyons and coastal sage. The Nix Nature Center is the gateway.
• Spa Day — Laguna has several world-class spas. Montage Laguna Beach spa is the standout for a day of pampering with ocean views.
• Festival of Arts & Pageant of the Masters — The famous summer festival runs July-August. The Pageant of the Masters is like nothing else — live tableaux performances of famous paintings.

• Roasted — Local coffee roaster with a cozy spot on Coast Highway. Great for a caffeine fix before hitting the beach.
• Las Brisas — Iconic Laguna restaurant perched on a cliff with sweeping ocean views. Mexican-inspired California cuisine. Perfect for sunset.
• The Cliff — New American with a patio overlooking Main Beach. Good for brunch or a romantic dinner.
• Selanne Steak Tavern — Upscale but approachable. Great steaks and an extensive wine list.
• Urth Caffé — California's favorite organic coffee chain has a Laguna outpost. Good for a quick bite.
• Nick's — Classic American spot with a lively bar. Burgers, steaks, and strong cocktails.
• Toyota USA Lemonade — Yes, that's really the name. A tiny stand famous for fresh-squeezed lemonade on Coast Highway.
• Rooftop Lounge — On top of the La Casa del Camino hotel. Craft cocktails with one of the best sunset views in town.

The tide matters in Laguna. Many of the best beaches (Thousand Steps, Rockpile, Victoria Beach) are significantly affected by tides — at high tide, they can practically disappear. Check the charts before you go, and plan to arrive at low tide for the full beach experience. The tide pools at Crystal Cove and Thousand Steps are best explored during negative low tides.
