Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel-by-the-Sea is one of the most distinctive small towns on the California coast — a walkable village of cottages, galleries, and garden paths that opens directly onto a white sand beach with some of the clearest water you'll find this far north. The combination of calm town energy, easy beach access, and dramatic coastal scenery just outside of town makes it an unusually satisfying destination for a day or a long weekend.

Carmel Beach is the centerpiece — fine white sand, dogs welcome off-leash in the evenings, and Monterey cypress trees framing the bluffs on either side. The water is cold and the surf can be lively, but the setting is striking in any conditions. Sunset here is reliably beautiful when it's clear, with the sun dropping behind the horizon with nothing between you and open ocean.

Tide timing is useful for planning the best beach and tide pool experience in Carmel. Lower tides expose more of the sandy beach and reveal rocky areas at the north end worth exploring. Point Lobos has some incredible intertidal areas that are best visited on minus tides — check the chart before heading down and plan an early start to catch the water at its lowest before it turns.
