Coronado

Coronado is a small peninsula city connected to San Diego by the graceful arc of the Coronado Bridge, separated from the mainland by the calm waters of San Diego Bay. It has an unusually clean, orderly small-town feel for a place so close to a major city — wide streets, a bicycle-friendly layout, and a military presence that gives the community its particular character. And at its western edge, facing the open Pacific, sits one of the finest beaches in California.

Coronado Beach is consistently rated among the best beaches in America — wide, sandy, and flanked by the red-roofed Victorian towers of the Hotel del Coronado, a National Historic Landmark that has stood on the shoreline since 1888. The sand here has a slight gold shimmer from mica flecks, and the beach is broad enough that even on busy summer weekends it rarely feels crowded.

• Hotel del Coronado — iconic 1888 Victorian resort; walk the beachfront even if you're not staying; the sun deck and beach bar are open to visitors.
• Orange Avenue — Coronado's main street with boutique shops, ice cream, and easy walkability connecting downtown to the Hotel del.
• Coronado Ferry Landing — ferry connection to downtown San Diego with waterfront restaurants and views back across the bay.
• Tidelands Park — bayfront park on the east side; great views of the Coronado Bridge and San Diego skyline.
• Silver Strand State Beach (nearby) — quieter beach on the ocean side of the Silver Strand; popular with families and kayakers.
• Coronado Cays (nearby) — residential waterway area popular with stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking on calm bay water.

Coronado Beach faces southwest and receives a mix of southern and western swell. The beach width and surf character change noticeably with tides — at lower tides, the exposed sand flat is enormous and easy to walk. If you're timing a visit around the sunset with the Hotel del Coronado in the foreground, check the tide chart: a lower tide in the evening gives you more reflective wet sand for photos and a longer walk to the water's edge.
