Dana Point

Dana Point sits at the southern tip of Orange County, where the coastline turns inward toward the harbor and the ocean opens up to the deep waters that make it one of the best places on the West Coast for marine life. This is whale watching central — gray whales pass by on their migration twice a year, and year-round you're likely to spot dolphins, sea lions, and even the occasional blue whale. The harbor is a hub for fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding, while the famous surf breaks at Doheny and Salt Creek draw everyone from beginners to pros.

Beaches and coastal attractions:

• Doheny State Beach — One of California's most popular state beaches. Great for families with a campground right on the sand. Mild waves make it perfect for beginner surfers and bodyboarders.
• Salt Creek Beach — The iconic stretch of sand below the Strands Hotel. Excellent surfing, especially in winter. The parking lot offers one of the most photographed ocean views in OC.
• Dana Point Harbor — A bustling harbor with restaurants, shops, and boat rentals. Grab fish tacos at Harbor Beach Cafe and watch the boats come and go.
• Dana Strand Beach — A more secluded beach at the base of the bluffs. Good for a quieter beach day and exploring tide pools at the north end.
• Monarch Beach — The luxury beach. Accessed through the Monarch Beach Resort or via a steep staircase from the parking lot. Dramatic cliffs, good snorkeling, and usually less crowded.
• The Dana Head — The dramatic rock formation at the south end of the harbor. A landmark of Dana Point and a great spot for sunset photos.
• Powderhouse Beach — A locals-only spot with a relaxed vibe. Good for surf fishing and watching the sunset without the tourist crowds.

Things to do:

• Whale Watching — Dana Point is known as the Whale Watching Capital of the World. Dana Point Whale Watching and Ocean Adventures run multiple trips daily. Gray whales December-April; blue whales June-October; resident dolphins year-round.
• Surfing & Bodyboarding — Doheny is a classic beginner spot with gentle waves. Salt Creek is more advanced with hollow, powerful breaks. Expect crowds on good swell days.
• Kayaking & Paddleboarding — The harbor is calm and perfect for paddling. Rentals available at Dana Point Harbor. For more adventure, kayak out to the sea caves at the base of the cliffs.
• Fishing — The jetties at both ends of the harbor are popular for fishing. Charter boats available for deeper water excursions.
• Ocean Institute — A marine education center with interactive exhibits, a historic tall ship, and whale watching departure point. Great for families.
• Trails — The Salt Creek Trail runs along the bluffs from the hotel area down to the beach. Great for hiking or biking with ocean views.
• San Juan Capistrano — Just inland, this historic mission town is worth a visit. The swallows return March 19th each year — a famous tradition.

Dana Point's location means it gets swell from both the north and south, making it surfable in almost any season. The harbor is protected and calm for paddling, but be careful around the jetties when conditions are rough. Tide matters less here than in rocky areas, but low tide at Doheny expands the beach significantly. Whale watching is best on calm water days — check the conditions before booking a trip.
