Encinitas

Encinitas is the spiritual home of California surf culture. This bohemian coastal town has been producing world-class surfers for decades, and you'll feel that laid-back energy everywhere — from the yoga studios on every corner to the coffee shops buzzing with locals. The town stretches along the bluffs with stunning sunset views, excellent restaurants, and beaches that work for everyone from beginner surfers to experienced locals who guard their breaks jealously.

Beaches and coastal attractions:

• Swamis — The legendary surf break. RL Drake's "Church of the Surf" was filmed here. Consistent, powerful waves that work in almost any condition. Best for intermediate to advanced surfers.
• Cardiff Reef (The Park) — Just north of the Encinitas border in Cardiff. One of the most popular surf spots in North County. Fun left and right breaks, good for beginners on smaller days.
• Moonlight Beach — Encinitas' main beach. Wide sandy stretch with volleyball courts, playground, and easy access. Great for families. The sunset views from the bluffs are iconic.
• Encinitas State Beach — South of Moonlight, this spot has tide pools at the north end and is known for its scenic bluffs. Usually less crowded than Moonlight.
• Grandview Beach — A smaller, more local beach between Moonlight and Swami's. Stairs lead down from the parking lot. Good for a quieter beach day.
• Beacon's Beach — A locals-only spot at the base of the bluffs. Good surf when conditions align. Park on top and hike down.

Things to do:

• Surfing — Whether you're a beginner or a pro, Encinitis has a spot for you. Lessons available through San Diego Surf School and local instructors. Start at Cardiff or Moonlight for learning, graduate to Swamis when you're ready.
• Yoga — This is yoga central. Lotus Sun Studios is the most famous, but there are studios on nearly every block. Many offer beach yoga in the mornings.
• Sunset Cliffs — Just south in Point Loma (but often associated with the Encinitas vibe). Dramatic bluffs, caves, and the best sunset views in San Diego.
• Leucadia — The northern part of Encinitas has a more funky, artsy vibe. Check out the shops along Highway 101 and the Paul E. Nelson Picture Frame shop (famous in surf culture).
• Crystal Pier — Not in Encinitas proper (it's in Pacific Beach), but nearby and worth a visit. You can walk out to the end and watch fishermen.
• San Diego Botanic Garden — A 37-acre garden with diverse plant collections. Great for families and nature lovers.
• Bike the Coast — The flat terrain and bike lanes along Coast Highway 101 make for perfect cycling. Rentals available.

• Ridge's Market — A local institution. Great for sandwiches, craft beer, and grabbing supplies for a beach picnic.
• Philz Coffee — The beloved Bay Area coffee chain has made its way south. Excellent pour-over coffee.
• La Papagayo — The best Mexican in Encinitas. Authentic, delicious, and always packed.
• Puesto — Modern Mexican with excellent tacos and a great happy hour.
• Naked Cafe — A local breakfast/brunch staple. Good coffee, scrambles, and that California-healthy vibe.
• Solterra — Vinoteca & Kitchen. Excellent wine and small plates. Great for a romantic dinner.
• Buona Forchetta — Authentic Neapolitan pizza. Wood-fired and delicious.
• Union Kitchen & Tap — Gastropub with good burgers and an extensive beer list.
• Village Pizzeria — Cardiff's legendary pizza. Cash-only, no reservations, always a line. Worth the wait.
• Brewer's — Classic dive bar with cheap beer and good times. Locals' hangout.

Encinitas is all about the surf and the sun. Swami's works in almost any condition, but check the swell direction — north and west swells are best. Low tide at Moonlight and Encinitas State Beach reveals excellent tide pools. The sunset views from the bluffs above Moonlight are legendary — join the locals for the nightly show. The town has a small-town feel despite being part of greater San Diego, and it's best experienced slowly. Grab a coffee, go for a surf, watch the sunset, repeat.
