How many high and low tides does the California coast get each day?

Most of the California coast has mixed semidiurnal tides: usually two high tides and two low tides every lunar day (about 24 hours 50 minutes), and the two highs and two lows are noticeably different heights. That is why tide times shift roughly 50 minutes later each day.

What does MLLW mean on a tide chart?

MLLW (Mean Lower Low Water) is the average height of the lower of the two daily low tides. NOAA tide heights are measured from it, so 0.0 ft is an average lower low tide and negative values (minus tides) are lower than average, which is the best time for tide pooling.
