San Luis Obispo County Fishing Report: 04-01-26

Good morning, Central Coast anglers! Here's your fishing report for April 1st, 2026. Spring is in full swing and fishing is heating up across the region!

🏞️ Lake Fishing Reports

Lake Nacimiento 🌟

• Temp: ~70°F, Clear water, 52% capacity
• Peak spring fishing! Water warming fast — fish are feeding aggressively
• White Bass: ✅ EXCELLENT! Big schools active on windy points — white/bladed jigs are dominating
• Spotted Bass: Great action on main lake points and creek channels — reaction baits working well
• Best Lures: Bladed jigs, hula grubs, spooks, drop shots, pin-tail trailers
• Crappie: Good — 2-3 inch swimbaits near deep docks and rocky points
• Bass: Quality fish being caught on shallow cranks and texas-rigged plastics
• Tip: Early morning bite (6-9 AM) is hottest — hit wind-blown points at dawn!

Santa Margarita Lake

• Temp: Mid 50s, clear visibility, near full capacity
• Largemouth Bass: ✅ GOOD BIT! Fish holding in 15-25 ft — drop-shotting is crushing it
• Best Baits: Senkos, drop-shots, Neko rigs, finesse worms in dark colors
• Crappie: Active on main lake points — small jigs in bright colors
• Catfish: Excellent — chicken liver and garlic shrimp producing big catches
• Trout: Fair — PowerBait and small spinners near the dam

Lopez Lake

• Temp: Mid 50s, stained water, moderate level
• Bass: Good — shad-colored cranks and jerkbaits on secondary points
• Panfish: Bluegill and crappie near marina on small Rapalas
• Tip: Drop-shotting in 25-35 ft for bigger bass

San Antonio Lake

• Temp: ~57°F, ~45% capacity, slightly stained
• Trout: Fair — chartreuse PowerBait near the narrows
• Catfish: ✅ Good! 2-5 lbs on chicken liver and garlic shrimp
• Bass: Improving — shallow cranks and spinnerbaits in coves

🌊 Ocean Fishing: Morro Bay

April marks the start of prime ocean fishing season! Current conditions:

• Lingcod: ✅ Good — fish up to 30+ lbs being caught
• Rockfish: EXCELLENT! Rockfish season now open — great variety
• Vermilion Rockfish: Strong showing
• Copper Rockfish: Good numbers
• Bocaccio: Active in 100-150 ft water
• Salmon: Picking up — early kings showing up, more to come!

Current Bait Report:

• 🐟 Mackerel schooling in the bay
• 🐟 Smelt near jetty and shoreline
• 🐟 Squid — strips doing very well!

Best Ocean Lures Right Now:

• 7" Squid strips
• Big Hammer swimbaits
• Krocodiles at 100-150 ft
• Rebel Deep Craws

Water Temp: ~54°F at Ft. McAllister — warming nicely for spring!
