San Luis Obispo County Fishing Report: 04-26-26

Happy Sunday! ๐ŸŒŠ Late April means one thing on the Central Coast โ€” prime fishing across the board. Lakes are warming, bass are spawning, and the ocean action is red hot. Let's dive in.

๐Ÿž๏ธ Lake Fishing Reports

Lake Nacimiento ๐ŸŒŸ

Conditions: Water temps 68-72ยฐF, clear to slightly stained โ€” this lake is absolutely firing on all cylinders. One of the best bass lakes in California right now.

  • Largemouth Bass: EXCELLENT ๐Ÿ”ฅ โ€” Peak spawn activity! Big females (6-10 lbs) are guarding beds in shallow bays and protected coves. Focus on 5-15 ft depth near gravel beds and hard bottom. Punch baits, soft plastics, and lizards are crushing it. Topwater early morning continues to produce big hits.
  • Spotted Bass: EXCELLENT โ€” Aggressive post-spawn feeding. White bladed jigs and jerkbaits along main lake points and rocky humps.
  • White Bass: EXCELLENT โ€” Schools staging near windy main lake points. White/.chartreuse bucktail jigs and small crankbaits for non-stop action.
  • Crappie: Good โ€” 1-2 lb slabs hanging around submerged timber and rocky pockets. Small swimbaits and jigs.
  • Catfish: Good โ€” chicken liver and cut bait near creek channels at dawn/dusk.

Lopez Lake ๐ŸŒŸ

Conditions: Low 60s water temp, slightly stained, all boating access open. Spring fishing at its finest.

  • Rainbow Trout: EXCELLENT โ€” CDFW spring stockings in full swing. Shore anglers doing well with chartreuse/rainbow PowerBait near the marina and campground areas. Trollers hitting limits on orange/pink spinners and small spoons.
  • Smallmouth Bass: GOOD โ€” Creek arms and windy coves producing. Soft plastics, shad-colored crankbaits, and jerkbaits near oak-lined banks.
  • Largemouth Bass: GOOD โ€” Moving to shallower water. Topwater and finesse plastics near submerged structure.
  • Crappie & Bluegill: Active near the marina and shallow coves. White jigs, small Rapalas, and redworms.
  • Blue Catfish: Decent โ€” garlic shrimp and chicken liver near deeper creek channels.

Santa Margarita Lake

Conditions: Lake is full, water temps low 60s, visibility good.

  • Largemouth Bass: GOOD โ€” Spawn is wrapping up but fish are still shallow and aggressive. Focus on points, protected coves, and weed edges. Swim jigs, Texas rigs, and topwater are producing 2-3 lb fish.
  • Red-ear Sunfish: Good in vegetated areas โ€” crickets and worms.
  • Crappie: Fair โ€” near brush piles and deeper structure.
  • Trout: Slow but some action on PowerBait near the Marina.

Whale Rock Reservoir

  • Largemouth Bass: HOT BIT! 68ยฐF, partly cloudy โ€” bass staging near shore, best window 8:00โ€“11:00 AM.
  • Presentation: Ned Rig, Swing Head, Texas-rigged green pumpkin plastics. Average 2-2.5 lbs.
  • Spotted Bass: Active on drop-offs โ€” deep crankbaits.

San Antonio Lake

  • Water Temp: ~58ยฐF, roughly half full
  • Largemouth Bass: GOOD โ€” Transitioning from spawn. Deep crankbaits in 15-25 ft, moving shallower as temps rise.
  • Catfish: Good at dusk/dawn on garlic shrimp and chicken liver.
  • Trout: Fair โ€” chartreuse PowerBait near deeper water.

๐ŸŒŠ Ocean Fishing: Morro Bay

Offshore fishing is excellent right now! Recent charter highlights from Virg's Landing:

  • Lingcod: Strong catches continuing โ€” 34 lingcod landed on recent 12-hour trips, plus 20+ released. Largest this week: 11 lb beast on Endeavor!
  • Rockfish: Massive numbers โ€” 288 rockfish on a single half-day trip! Top performers: Blue Rockfish, Vermilion, Copper, Bocaccio, and Yellowtail.
  • Halibut: Starting to show up โ€” keep an eye out as waters warm.
  • Sea Conditions: Morning fog giving way to calm, sunny afternoons. Flat seas and light winds making for ideal offshore conditions.

โš ๏ธ Regulations reminder: Quillback and yelloweye rockfish remain closed. Check CDFW regulations before your trip.

Book now โ€” spring weekends are filling fast!

๐Ÿ“… This Week's Outlook
